Is
the Summer Heat Killing your Company’s
Productivity?
Here
is what NASA found out when they conducted a study
about heat and related effectiveness of human productivity.
NASA study, CR-1205-1, "A Compendium
of Human Responses to the Aerospace Environment"
NASA Report CR-1205-1
Effective Temp. 75º 80º 85º 90º 95º 100º 105º
Loss in Output 3% 8% 18% 29% 45% 62% 79%
Loss in Accuracy -- 5% 40% 300% 700% -- --
This definitive report shows a strong
correlation between the effective temperature and human
productivity. At 85 degrees, work output drops by 18%,
while accuracy suffers by 40%! While productivity is
the most obviously costly product of a hot, uncomfortable
work environment, that's not the end of it. Your company’s
bottom line also suffers from:
Low Morale caused by uncomfortable
work environment results in tardiness, absenteeism
and turnover. The summer increase in negative reactions
is again documented through production records. Vacant
work stations result in lowered efficiency, possible
overtime paid to meet schedules, and the hiring and
training costs for replacements.
Health Factors relating heat stress
in the working environment is an increasing concern
of regulatory agencies. The National Institute of Occupational
Safety & Health (NIOSH) has developed a preliminary
standard for allowable heat stress levels.
The standard defines environ-mental
temperature requirements and work-time / rest time
percentages tolerable for employees.
Safety is a major economic consideration
in all working areas. Safe working conditions are important
in keeping insurance costs down and avoiding disruptions.
The hot, uncomfortable worker is more liable to ignore
good safety practice and allow accident-causing situations
to occur. We can all use a break from the rising cost
of workers compensation insurance.
Payback an important factor in determining
the purchase of equipment. As wages inflate, it becomes
increasingly important to get the full productivity
you are paying for from your employees by keeping their
working conditions comfortable.
What does 18% of your payroll cost
per month? Or 29%...or 45%? If you consider payback
as an important factor in your equipment buying decisions,
you cannot ignore the importance and value associated
with providing your employees a comfortable work environment.
